Five ways to check, and when each one is worth using

They are not equivalent. Pick by what you have to hand:

1. By SMS — fastest if your SIM is the registered one

Send a text in this format:

Which identifier you use depends on the account type. Premium accounts are tied to a plate number; To-Go accounts use the card number printed on the tag.

There is one catch worth knowing before you rely on this: the text has to come from the mobile number registered to the account. Borrow a friend's phone and you will get nothing back. If your number has changed since you signed up — which is common enough — update it at a customer service lane first, or this method will keep silently failing and you will assume the service is down.

2. The online balance inquiry page

Autosweep runs a web balance checker at autosweeprfidapps.com/balanceinquiry. It is the quickest route if you are already at a desktop, and it does not need the app. Enter your account details and the current balance comes back on screen.

Bookmark it. The number of people who reinstall an app once a month to check one figure is higher than it should be.

3. The Autosweep mobile app

The official app is on Google Play. Register with your mobile number and email, verify the one-time PIN, then add your Autosweep account number — the balance sits on the home screen after that.

Its real advantage is multiple vehicles. If you run two cars, or a car and a van for the business, the app tracks each account separately instead of making you text twice. Apple users have historically had the thinner end of this deal, so check the App Store before assuming an iOS version is available to you.

4. The customer portal

The web portal at autosweeprfidapps.com/customerportal uses the same credentials as the app. Use it when you need more than a number: a statement of account, a transaction history, or evidence for a disputed deduction. If you think you were charged twice at a plaza, this is where you get the timestamps to prove it.

5. The lane display, every time you pass

This is the one people forget. Every RFID lane shows the fee deducted and your remaining balance on the display as the barrier lifts. You also get an SMS receipt after each transaction with the same figures.

Get into the habit of glancing at it on the way out of the city. Catching a low balance on your first plaza of a long trip is a minor annoyance; catching it on the last one is not.

Which expressways actually run on Autosweep

This is where most guides get vague, and it matters more than the balance itself — a full account is no use on a road that does not accept it. Autosweep covers six expressways, roughly 218 km of tolled road:

Everything else — NLEX, SCTEX, CAVITEX (the Coastal Road) and CALAX — runs on Easytrip, and has its own separate account. The three places you cross from Autosweep into Easytrip

Roughly speaking, the roads heading south out of Manila are Autosweep and the roads heading north are Easytrip. The exceptions are what strand people. There are exactly three interchanges on the network where the payment system changes mid-journey:

• Balintawak — Skyway (Autosweep) meets NLEX (Easytrip)
• C-5 — Skyway (Autosweep) meets CAVITEX (Easytrip)
• ABI / Greenfield — SLEX (Autosweep) meets CALAX (Easytrip)

If your drive crosses one of those on two separate accounts, a healthy Autosweep balance is only half the job. A Manila-to-Tagaytay run is the classic trap: Skyway and SLEX take Autosweep as far as Greenfield, then CALAX wants Easytrip for the last leg.

How much load do you actually need?

"Keep a few hundred in there" is useless advice when a single trip can cost more than that. Here is what some common drives cost in tolls for a Class 1 car, using the current official rates:

When the number looks wrong

The balance has not moved since your last trip. Posting is not always instant. Give it a few hours before assuming a fault, then check the portal's transaction list rather than the balance alone.

You were deducted twice at one plaza. It happens. Pull the timestamps from the customer portal and raise it on the hotline with those in hand — a specific time and plaza gets resolved far faster than "I think I was overcharged last week".

The barrier did not lift. Usually insufficient balance, but a tag mounted behind metallic tint or a heat-reflective windshield can read intermittently. If it fails at more than one plaza, get the tag checked rather than reloading again.

SMS gets no reply. Almost always the registered-number problem described above.
